What is that smell??

The first thing we had to do this morning was make a run to the dump to empty the dump truck. We had piled the wood and plaster in the bathroom upstairs until we had room on the truck...it was full from the day before.

I have never gone with Dan to dump it, and was I in for a sensory experience. He didn't mention it until he got out of the truck and just happened to say as he closed the door, "The smell is awful." That was an understatement! It was overwhelming.

You have to drive up to the scales and get weighed, then you drive around the mountain winding your way up as you go. When you reach the top, it is actually a very pretty view. You almost lose that when your other senses are assaulted! Here are a few pictures - I'm sorry I couldn't share the smell with you!

The Great View

From the truck window....I didn't get out!

Piles and piles of the stuff!

And, did you know, when they start a new dump area, they put down tires first? I had no idea....

Ok, enough garbage talk.
We returned to working on the upstairs bathroom. We completely gutted it today. We found out we have a yellow (not that we didn't know it was yellow to start with!) cast iron bathtub, and two cast iron sinks.

And the bathroom is gutted

One of the things Dan pointed out to me as we pulled bucket after bucket of plaster off the walls, there is horse hair in old plaster. Evidently, that's what helped hold it together.

I knew you would want proof of such a wonderful fact!

Two more fun things we found while doing the bathroom.

First, in the window, they used to use weights to pull the window back down into a closed position - or something. Here are the mongo weights in the window:

Secondly, the wall around the tub had several layers. The first layer was a cheap surround. Under that was a heavy, yellow/brown tile. The wall came out in one piece and was so heavy it took two people to move it.

I took a close-up picture so you could also see the "wonderful-ness".

Hank came over this afternoon and started working outside before we knew he was there! By the time I grabbed the camera and snapped a picture here is what was left of the monstrosity of a tree in the front window.

Isn't this funny?!

Hank had also trimmed the big maple on the side yard, but couldn't reach some of the higher branches. Dan went out to help with that...

Then to finish off the day, we tore the flooring and paneling out of the back bedroom.

All done

Dan never got to use his new toy - the Bakers Scaffolding. So tomorrow we assured him he would get his chance. We are going to set it up on the stairs and take the plaster off those walls. Sounds fun, doesn't it?
