We planned two days for demolition. Last night over dinner (of leftover sandwiches from lunch – we were too tired to think about cooking) we derided ourselves a bit for only giving ourselves two days to tear everything out. We’ve now stretched that to the weekend. That gives us 3 more days to accomplish tearing everything out. Then we will concentrate a couple days on getting moved out of the old place. That puts it over the holiday weekend. A great way to celebrate a holiday, isn’t it?!
Dan and Dave tackled the load bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room first thing this morning. I’ll put up a few pictures that tell the story. They had to first put up a wall on both sides of the existing beam. After securing it, they made a beam by gluing and nailing 3 pieces of wood together….they pretty much made a sandwich of wood and put it up with several 2x4’s at both ends. Then they took the temporary walls down.
Here the pictures show you…..
Two supporting walls
Original beam still in the middle
Old beams coming out
OOOPS! You dropped that a little too fast, Dave!
Now putting the new beam together
Enough of that....more than you ever wanted to know about beam construction, right?!
Here it is completed and installed
Then the first big injury, if countless splinters don't count.
Dave was swinging the hammer or something, and caught his arm on a cut off pipe. Glad I took a few first aid items, they sure came in handy today!
Another room that got worked on today was the future family room. It used to be the kitchen. Previous owners put up, or should I say permanently affixed, paneling that looks like tile to the walls. They had put up OSB sheets behind the paneling. So you can imagine how much fun it is to try to peel off the permanently affixed (did I say permanent?!) panels off wood. It took hours...then the sheets of wood had to be unscrewed and removed.
Heeeere they are
Dan's look says, "Oh, no, what have I done?" Doesn't it?
Actually, I think he's saying, "Oh, no, I can't breathe, wait a minute....."
"There, that's better.
And, can you tell I'm smiling?"
Ok, I feel like I just did all that over again.
I'm tired.
Have a great night, and thanks for reading!
Can't forget to add though, that Hank stopped by again today - Thank the Lord!
Because when Dave got done tearing out the rest of the outside wall in the new kitchen and old bath, the toilet and sink were sitting there daring him to take the wall out behind them. We inquired if it would be possible to take them out, I mean remove them. They have to go anyway, so Dan and Hank graciously removed them. We now have an empty bathroom - it is awesome!
Proof
Toilet, sink still in
Toilet and sink gone
That's Hank with the spotlight on his back - not sure why!
Getting ready to "beam up" possibly!?
I'm beaming out....Night!
Wow another fun filled day for the Conklins! You guys are simply amazing!! I mean it! I see the bank of cupboards in the future family room are gone! Just keep thinking how awesome this is all gonna look when you're all done.
ReplyDeleteI have seen Mike Holmes (from Holmes on Homes) replace a header but I don't think he could have done it better then Mr. Conklin!!!
Good job guys, I for one am proud of you!!
